Diazepam is a prescription medication used for the treatment of muscle spasms, as well as anxiety and seizures. If you are taking the extended-release capsule make sure you do not chew or crush it, as otherwise you may not benefit form your dosage. Extended-release capsules are supposed to dissolve in your stomach and will be less effective if crushed and mixed with some food. There are other forms of diazepam that can be crushed, and you can consult your doctor or pharmacist for more information. Diazepam is not supposed to be taken for longer than 4 month unless otherwise recommended by your health care provider. Diazepam can be habit-forming and can stop being efficient if you take it for a very long time. This is why it’s important to be under your doctor’s close supervision to make sure you are benefitting from the treatment. If you need to stop the treatment a gradual withdrawal is recommended to avoid unpleasant withdrawal symptoms, such as irritability, sleeplessness and anxiousness. You are not supposed to take diazepam if you are also taking other medications without previously talking to your health care provider. The drugs that should be mentioned include probenicid, antihistamines, sleeping pills, propranolol, theophylline, muscle relaxants, propoxyphene, isoniazid, disulfiram, tranquilizers, ranitidine, drugs used to treat depression, colds, asthma, seizures, pain and allergies, rifampin, vitamins, valproic acid, ketoconazole, fluoxetine, oral contraceptives, cimetidine, sedatives, metoprolol, and digoxin.
